Multi-day hail clusters and isolated hail days in Switzerland – large-scale flow conditions and precursors

چکیده
Abstract. In Switzerland, hail regularly occurs in multi-day clusters. The atmospheric conditions prior to and during clusters are described contrasted the isolated days. analysis focuses on days that occurred between April September 2002–2019 within 140 km of Swiss radar network. Hail north south Alps defined using a minimum area threshold radar-based product. Multi-day as 5 d windows containing 4 or single day. reanalysis ERA-5 is used study large-scale flow combination with objectively identified cold fronts, blocking events, weather type classification. Both Alps, have frequency maxima May August–September, whereas clustered occur mostly July August. Composites variables indicate more stationary meridionally amplified both On blocks frequent over North Sea, surface fronts located farther from Switzerland than Clustered also characterized by significantly higher most unstable convective available potential energy (MUCAPE) values, warmer daily maximum temperatures, moisture content Hence, anomalous amounts necessary for side. contrast, differences MUCAPE side small. mean sea level pressure deeper, temperature colder, local lower upper-level eastern Atlantic 3 Moreover, 10 % Scandinavia, but no Half Alps. clustering only frequently Alpine ridge, low-level winds stronger. temporal coupled specific synoptic- local-scale conditions; this information may be exploited short- medium-range forecasts Switzerland.

An interdisciplinary assessment of hail suppression in the past, present, and future has shown it to be currently scientifically uncertain but a potentially beneficial future technology. An established suppression technology would be widely adopted in the Great Plains, providing benefits to agriculture and secondarily to the American consumer. Development of a reliable technology will require a...
متن کاملHail Sensing Probes: Feasibility Analysis for Probes to Monitor and Study Hail
This work presents the feasibility study regarding the realization of hail sensing probes for remote sensing and study of hail. The probes are designed as artificial hailstones in order to study both the physical properties of the portion of atmosphere where the formation of hail occurs and the modification of atmospheric conditions while the hailstones are falling to the ground. The basic idea...
متن کاملAssociating Monthly Hail Occurrence and Large Scale Environment for the 1 Continental United States
4 A new index relating large hail occurrence to environmental parameters has been developed. Hail 5 events are defined as the total number of three-hourly periods in a month that experience one or 6 more instance of hail larger than one inch. The index is derived using Poisson regression between 7 hail events and monthly mean variables describing the large scale environment from the North 8 Ame...
